College Recruitment Process

Understanding the recruitment process helps players target the right schools and programs while preparing to expedite their decisions:

  • Gender and Title IX:
Title IX ensures equity in men’s and women’s athletics, influencing funding allocation. Schools with costly sports like Football may have fewer resources for other programs. Female athletes benefit from equal funding compliance.
  • The Sport:
High-priority sports like Men’s Basketball and Football receive the most resources. Athletes in sports like soccer must be proactive: sending highlight videos, completing paperwork, and applying for grants.
  • Size of School:
Athletes must find a school that fits their personality:
    • Large campuses (e.g., UCONN) offer more options but may feel overwhelming.
    • Smaller schools provide a closer community but fewer program options.

Factors to Consider

  • Size of Program:
Some schools prioritize non-traditional sports (e.g., Rowing at Ivy Leagues or Lacrosse at Johns Hopkins). Athletes must identify schools that prioritize their sport.

  • Family’s Financial Situation:

    • Tuition costs can vary; Financial Aid (FAFSA) plays a key role.
    • Middle-income families may face challenges affording private schools.
  • Student’s Academic History:
Academic performance (GPA, SAT/ACT) impacts scholarship eligibility and program admission. Better grades decrease the financial burden and reflect commitment.

Division I, II, or III

Understanding the divisions helps athletes choose the best fit:

  • Division I: Highest level, regionally/nationally competitive, but demanding schedules.
  • Division II: Smaller enrollments, fewer resources, but competitive programs.
  • Division III: No athletic scholarships; focus on student-athlete balance.

Athletic Ability

Athletic ability is a key factor in recruitment:

  • Elite athletes attract coaches and programs directly.
  • Others must actively market themselves by sending videos and staying organized.
  • Division II and III programs focus less on “win-at-all-costs” and more on athlete development.
